Description

The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 1 & 2 IgG and IgM test detects antibodies specific to HSV types 1 and 2 in the blood. Each test measures two types of antibodies:

• IgM antibodies are the first to appear after initial infection, usually indicating a recent or primary infection.
• IgG antibodies develop later and remain in the body for life, showing past exposure or a longstanding infection.

A positive result for HSV-1 IgG indicates past exposure to HSV-1 (often associated with oral herpes), while a positive HSV-2 IgG indicates past exposure to HSV-2 (commonly associated with genital herpes). Testing for both IgG and IgM antibodies in HSV-1 and HSV-2 helps determine the timing of infection and differentiate between a recent infection and previous exposure. This test is useful in both diagnosing HSV infections and assessing whether someone has been exposed to HSV-1, HSV-2, or both.
