Description

The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 1 IgM test detects IgM antibodies in the blood specific to HSV type 1, the virus commonly associated with oral herpes (cold sores). IgM antibodies are the first to appear after an initial infection, so a positive IgM result usually indicates a recent or primary HSV-1 infection. This test is useful in diagnosing early-stage HSV-1 infections, as IgM antibodies generally decline as the infection progresses. However, IgM can occasionally reappear during reactivation of the virus, so it is not always definitive for a new infection.
