Description
- TB – GOLD Test: The TB – GOLD test, also known as the QuantiFERON-TB Gold test, is a blood test used to detect latent tuberculosis (TB) infection by measuring the immune response to specific TB antigens.
- Purpose: This test is primarily used for screening individuals at risk of TB infection, particularly in populations where TB is common, or in healthcare settings. It helps identify those who may benefit from preventive therapy, even in the absence of active disease symptoms.
- Test Methodology: A blood sample is drawn and mixed with specific TB antigens. After incubation, the sample is analyzed to measure the immune response (interferon-gamma production), indicating whether the person has been exposed to the TB bacteria.
- Interpretation:
- Positive Result: Indicates that the person has been infected with TB bacteria, suggesting either latent TB infection or active TB disease, and further evaluation may be needed.
- Negative Result: Suggests no TB infection, but may not completely rule out the possibility, especially in immunocompromised individuals or those with recent exposures.
- Advantages: Unlike the tuberculin skin test (TST), the TB – GOLD test does not require patient follow-up for reading results and is not affected by prior BCG vaccination, making it a more reliable option in certain populations.
- Clinical Relevance: The TB – GOLD test is an important tool for TB control programs, helping to identify and treat latent infections before they progress to active disease, thereby reducing transmission rates.
