The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 2 IgG & IgM test detects both IgG and IgM antibodies specific to HSV type 2 in the blood.

• IgM antibodies indicate a recent or primary infection, typically appearing within a week or two after exposure to the virus.
• IgG antibodies develop later and persist for life, signifying past exposure or a longstanding infection.

A positive HSV-2 IgM result suggests a recent infection, while a positive HSV-2 IgG indicates previous exposure to the virus, commonly associated with genital herpes. This dual testing approach helps determine the timing of the infection and provides insight into the individual’s HSV-2 status. However, IgM results can sometimes be misleading, as they may also appear during the reactivation of a previous infection, so additional clinical correlation may be necessary for accurate diagnosis.
