Description

The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 1 & 2 IgM test detects IgM antibodies in the blood specific to HSV types 1 and 2, the viruses responsible for oral and genital herpes. IgM antibodies are the first to appear following initial infection, so a positive result generally suggests a recent or primary infection. This test is useful in early detection of HSV before IgG antibodies are produced. However, because HSV can periodically reactivate, IgM testing alone may not always reliably indicate a new infection, as IgM antibodies can sometimes reappear during reactivation of a previous infection.
