Description

The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 1 & 2 IgG/IgM test is a blood test used to detect antibodies against HSV types 1 and 2, which cause oral and genital herpes. The test measures two types of antibodies:

  • IgM antibodies, which appear shortly after initial infection, indicating a recent or primary infection.
  • IgG antibodies, which develop later and indicate past exposure or a longer-term infection.

Testing for both IgG and IgM helps differentiate between new and past infections, aiding in diagnosis and management. However, a positive result does not always indicate active symptoms, as HSV can remain dormant in the body and reactivate later.
