GeneXpert/CBNAAT (Cartridge-Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) is a rapid molecular diagnostic test used primarily for the detection of tuberculosis (TB) and resistance to rifampicin, one of the first-line anti-TB medications. The GeneXpert system utilizes real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology to identify the genetic material of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in clinical samples, such as sputum.
This test is notable for its speed, providing results in approximately two hours, which facilitates prompt diagnosis and treatment initiation. It is particularly valuable in resource-limited settings and for patients with suspected multidrug-resistant TB. GeneXpert/CBNAAT is also used for diagnosing other infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, by detecting specific viral RNA. The test’s high sensitivity and specificity make it an important tool in public health efforts to control and manage TB and other infectious diseases effectively.
