Description

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is a blood test that measures the rate at which red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube over a specified period, usually one hour. The ESR is an indirect indicator of inflammation in the body; when inflammation is present, proteins such as fibrinogen can cause red blood cells to clump together and settle more quickly. A higher ESR may suggest the presence of inflammatory conditions, infections, autoimmune diseases, or certain cancers. Conversely, a low ESR is generally considered normal but can sometimes indicate other health issues. The ESR test is often used alongside other diagnostic tests to help assess a patient’s overall health and to monitor the progression of inflammatory diseases.
