Description
The D-Dimer Quantitative test measures the level of D-dimer in the blood, a fibrin degradation product that is formed when a blood clot dissolves. It is an important marker used to assess the presence of abnormal clotting and is primarily used in the evaluation of conditions such as:
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Blood clots in the deep veins of the legs.
- Pulmonary embolism (PE): A blockage in the pulmonary arteries, often due to clots that travel from the legs or other parts of the body.
- Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC): A serious condition involving widespread clotting and bleeding.
Elevated D-dimer levels may indicate the presence of a blood clot, but they are not specific to any one condition. Consequently, the test is often used in conjunction with clinical assessments and other diagnostic imaging techniques to confirm or rule out thromboembolic events. Normal D-dimer levels suggest that significant clot formation and breakdown are unlikely.
