Description
The Creatine Kinase MB (CK-MB) Activity test measures the level of CK-MB, an enzyme found primarily in the heart muscle. This enzyme plays a crucial role in energy production in heart cells. Elevated levels of CK-MB in the blood are often associated with myocardial infarction (heart attack) or other heart muscle damage.
The test is typically performed when a patient presents with symptoms of a heart attack, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or abnormal ECG findings. CK-MB levels usually rise within a few hours after heart damage occurs, peak around 24 hours, and then decrease over a few days. Monitoring CK-MB levels can help assess the extent of heart injury and guide treatment decisions.
