Description
- Coombs Test – Direct: This test, also known as the Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT), detects antibodies that are bound to the surface of red blood cells. It is primarily used to identify autoimmune hemolytic anemia and assess transfusion reactions.
- Overview: The Direct Coombs Test is performed on a blood sample to determine if the immune system is producing antibodies against the patient’s own red blood cells, which can lead to their destruction and result in anemia.
- Purpose: This test is often ordered when a patient exhibits symptoms of hemolytic anemia, such as fatigue, jaundice, or dark urine. It is also used in prenatal testing to evaluate the risk of hemolytic disease of the newborn.
- Interpretation: A positive result indicates that antibodies are attached to the red blood cells, suggesting an immune-mediated process that may be causing hemolysis. A negative result indicates that no such antibodies are present.
- Procedure: A blood sample is drawn from the patient and mixed with Coombs reagent (anti-human globulin). The sample is then evaluated for agglutination, which indicates the presence of antibodies on the red blood cells. No special preparation is usually needed.
