Description

The Coombs Direct Test (also known as the Direct Antiglobulin Test, or DAT) is used to detect antibodies or complement proteins attached to the surface of red blood cells. It helps identify conditions where the immune system mistakenly targets red blood cells, leading to their destruction (hemolysis). This test is commonly used to diagnose autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hemolytic disease of the newborn, or reactions to blood transfusions. A positive result indicates the presence of antibodies, suggesting that red blood cells are being attacked by the immune system.
