Description

The Coombs Indirect Test (also known as the Indirect Antiglobulin Test, or IAT) is used to detect antibodies present in the blood serum that could bind to red blood cells. Unlike the direct test, which checks for antibodies already attached to red blood cells, the indirect test is used to identify antibodies that are free-floating in the bloodstream.

This test is commonly used for blood compatibility testing before transfusions, in prenatal screening to detect antibodies in pregnant women that may affect the fetus (such as in Rh incompatibility), and for evaluating reactions to blood transfusions. A positive result indicates the presence of antibodies that could cause problems if incompatible blood is transfused or in certain pregnancy conditions.
