Description

Total Bilirubin measures the overall amount of bilirubin in the blood, including both direct (conjugated) and indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment formed during the breakdown of red blood cells and is processed by the liver. Total bilirubin levels are used to assess liver function and diagnose various conditions, such as jaundice, hemolytic anemia, and liver diseases like hepatitis or cirrhosis. Elevated total bilirubin levels may indicate an excess of bilirubin production, liver dysfunction, or issues with bile excretion, while low levels are generally not a concern. Monitoring total bilirubin is important for diagnosing and managing liver and blood disorders.
