Description

A platelet count is a blood test that measures the number of platelets, or thrombocytes, present in a given volume of blood. Platelets are essential for blood clotting and help prevent excessive bleeding by forming plugs at sites of injury in blood vessels. Normal platelet counts typically range from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. A low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) may indicate conditions such as bone marrow disorders, autoimmune diseases, or certain infections, while a high platelet count (thrombocytosis) may suggest inflammation, iron deficiency, or other underlying conditions. The platelet count is a key component of a complete blood count (CBC) and is often used to assess overall health and diagnose various medical conditions.
