Description

Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) is a screening test used to assess the body’s ability to process glucose, particularly during pregnancy to identify gestational diabetes. During this test, the individual is given a sweet beverage containing a specific amount of glucose (usually 50 grams) and blood samples are taken after one hour to measure the blood glucose level.

The primary purpose of the glucose challenge test is to evaluate how the body responds to glucose intake without requiring fasting. A blood glucose level of 140 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) or higher typically indicates the need for further testing, such as the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), to diagnose gestational diabetes or insulin resistance. The GCT is a simple and non-invasive way to screen for glucose metabolism issues, helping to ensure the health of both the mother and the baby during pregnancy.
