Description

The Creatine Kinase MB (CK-MB) Mass test measures the concentration of the CK-MB isoenzyme in the blood. Unlike the CK-MB activity test, which assesses the enzyme’s activity, the mass test quantifies the actual amount of CK-MB present. This measurement is particularly useful for diagnosing and monitoring myocardial infarction (heart attack) or other forms of heart muscle damage.

Elevated levels of CK-MB mass indicate damage to the heart muscle, and the test can help distinguish between cardiac and non-cardiac sources of elevated creatine kinase. CK-MB levels typically rise within a few hours of heart injury, peak around 24 hours, and then gradually decline over several days. This test is often used alongside other cardiac markers, such as troponin, to provide a comprehensive assessment of cardiac health.
