Description

The Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood, a waste product produced by the liver as it breaks down proteins. Urea is normally filtered by the kidneys and excreted in urine. The BUN test helps assess kidney function by indicating how well the kidneys are filtering waste from the blood. Elevated BUN levels may suggest kidney dysfunction, dehydration, or other conditions affecting kidney health, while lower levels can be associated with liver disease or malnutrition. It is commonly used to monitor patients with kidney disease or those undergoing dialysis.
