The Apolipoprotein B (APO-B) test measures the level of APO-B, a primary protein found in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. Each LDL particle contains one APO-B molecule, making it a key indicator of the number of atherogenic particles in the bloodstream. Elevated levels of APO-B are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke, as they reflect higher concentrations of LDL particles that can contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries. The APO-B test is useful for assessing cardiovascular risk, especially in individuals with normal or borderline lipid profiles. A blood sample is required for this test, and no special preparation is generally needed.
