Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Test Description:
The Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) test measures the level of AFP, a protein that is normally produced by the liver and yolk sac of a developing fetus. In adults, elevated AFP levels can indicate liver diseases, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (a type of liver cancer), or germ cell tumors. The test is also used in pregnancy to assess fetal development and screen for potential abnormalities, such as neural tube defects or chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome. AFP levels are typically measured in a blood sample, and results are interpreted in conjunction with other diagnostic tests and clinical information. No special preparation is generally required for the test.
