Description
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme found in various tissues throughout the body, with the highest concentrations in the liver, bones, kidneys, and bile ducts. It plays a vital role in breaking down proteins and is involved in processes such as bone mineralization and bile production. ALP levels are commonly measured in blood tests to evaluate liver and bone health. Elevated ALP levels may indicate liver diseases (such as cholestasis or hepatitis), bone disorders (such as Paget’s disease or osteomalacia), or conditions affecting bile flow. Conversely, low ALP levels can be seen in certain nutritional deficiencies or genetic conditions.
