The Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) test, also known as Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase (SGOT), measures the level of AST enzyme in the blood. AST is primarily found in the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys, and it plays a role in amino acid metabolism. Elevated AST levels can indicate liver damage or disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease, as well as conditions affecting the heart and muscles, such as myocardial infarction or muscle disorders. The AST test is often performed alongside other liver function tests, including Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), to provide a comprehensive assessment of liver health. A blood sample is required for this test, and no special preparation is usually necessary.
