Amylase Test Description:
The amylase test measures the level of amylase, an enzyme that aids in the digestion of carbohydrates, in the blood or urine. Amylase is produced primarily by the pancreas and salivary glands. This test is often used to help diagnose conditions related to the pancreas, such as pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, or blockages in the pancreatic duct. Elevated amylase levels in the blood can indicate acute or chronic pancreatitis, while low levels may suggest pancreatic insufficiency. In some cases, urine amylase levels may also be assessed. The test usually requires a blood sample, and patients may need to fast for a few hours before the test for accurate results.
