Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) Test Description:
The Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) test measures the level of alkaline phosphatase enzyme in the blood. ALP is found in various tissues throughout the body, particularly in the liver, bones, kidneys, and bile ducts. This enzyme plays a crucial role in processes such as bone mineralization and liver function. Elevated ALP levels can indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or bone disorders, such as Paget’s disease or osteomalacia. Conversely, low ALP levels may suggest malnutrition or certain genetic conditions. The test is often performed alongside other liver function tests and bone markers to provide a comprehensive assessment of health. No special preparation is usually required, although fasting for a few hours may be recommended in some cases.
