Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) is an enzyme involved in purine metabolism, and its activity is measured in certain body fluids, particularly pleural fluid, to aid in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). Elevated ADA levels, especially in pleural or cerebrospinal fluid, are commonly associated with TB infections and other conditions involving immune activation, such as certain lymphomas and autoimmune diseases. ADA testing helps in the diagnostic workup for TB, particularly in cases of suspected tuberculous pleuritis, and can support decisions about further testing and treatment.
